A Folkestone based charity specialising in flying to remote areas to provide humanitarian aid is working in the relief effort in Nepal.

Disaster response teams from the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), which also has a centre in Ashford, are working alongside others in the country, after the 7.8 magnitude quake on April 25.

Staff have been organising for medical and search and rescue teams to fly by helicopter to some of the most remote and isolated areas.

MAF secured the use of two helicopters from a Nepalese company and has since organised flights to rescue eight British tourists, and four further flights transporting British search and rescue teams.

The government’s Department for Foreign and International Development (DFID) is now funding MAF to run a co-ordinated helicopter response station.

The need for aid and medical support is increasing as waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery are becoming more likely due to the lack of clean water.
