A man arrested after police were involved in a stand-off in Folkestone for more than 16 hours is facing child sex charges.

Officers were called to Shorncliffe Road at just before 5am on Sunday following reports of a person on the roof of a property.

Now 39-year-old Matthew Beevor, of no fixed address, has been charged with eight offences - including false imprisonment.

He is accused of sexually assaulting a young boy and inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity.

Beevor is also alleged to have assaulted two young teenagers.

Police have also charged him with burglary and theft at a flat in Hythe on April 19 as well as theft from a BP garage in Townwall Street, Dover on March 31.

Beevor was remanded in custody to appear at Folkestone Magistrates' Court today.

During negotiations, Shorncliffe Road - a main road into the town centre - was closed at the junction of Godwyn Road and Grimston Avenue.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to thank residents and members of the public for their co-operation allowing officers to attend the incident."

Firefighters from Deal were also called to the incident after the emergency services were called at 4.45am.
