Police say a lorry driver who drove non-stop without taking a break for days is lucky to be alive.

Officers stopped the trucker for driving too long without a break in the "worst offence" of its kind they had seen.

The Kent Police Commercial Vehicle Unit pulled over the German-registered lorry at the Channel Tunnel earlier today.

He was reported for summons and slapped with a fine of £1,500.

An officer from the Kent Police roads unit tweeted: "HGV1 stopped,Worst hrs offences I've ever seen! Hasn't rested in days/weeks, non stop driving most days and nights #incredibleheisalive".

Police were unable to say exactly how many hours he had been driving for without stopping.

The fine will act as a court deposit for committing multiple offences relating to driving excess hours without taking a break.

It was clamped to ensure the driver takes the required 45 hour break before next driving.

A release fee of £80 will also have to be paid.
