Trawler Race weekend is almost upon us again as Folkestone’s fishing quarter prepares for its two biggest days in the year.

A new addition is coming to the festival on Saturday and Sunday which is expected to be watched by thousands of people from The Stade and the Harbour Arm – as the town celebrates its fishing heritage.

The trawlers will set off for the historic race on Saturday with entertainment starting from midday and the race getting under way at 2pm.

Last year’s winners included Barmy Army taking the title as the fastest boat, Viking Princess won best-dressed boat while The Valentine was crowned best-dressed crew.

The same prizes will be awarded again this year but this year’s trawler race will feature motor boats racing alongside the fishing vessels.

Sunday will see the return of the hilarious raft race and paddles try to get across the harbour the fastest in a hugely entertaining frenzy.

The race begins at 2pm with judging starting at midday for the Mison’s Annual Fish Pie competition.

Judging will take place opposite The Mariners pub on The Stade by Rocksalt’s Mark Sargeant, deputy mayor of Folkestone Cllr Anne Berry, Terry Noakes of Folkestone Trawlers and Kay McLoughlin.

Alongside the fun on the water, there will be loads of entertainment on the shore including fairground rides, arts and crafts, displays about Folkestone’s maritime heritage.

Live music will be playing into the evening on Saturday and returning on Sunday afternoon. There will be lots of opportunities to buy fresh fish and local produce.

Entry for the fish pie competition costs £3 with money raised going to the National Coastwatch Institution which is based up on the East Cliff.
