A Kent investor who has pumped millions of pounds into a seaside town is the 10th richest in the south east, beating Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell.

Brothers Sir Roger and Peter De Haan are worth £895 million this year according to the The Sunday Times rich list for 2017, which is £5 million less than last year.

Swedish businessman Jorn Rausing, who lives in Surrey, hits the number one spot with reported wealth of £9.66 billion, up a staggering £960 million from 2016.

This wealth derives from the Tetra Laval packaging group, owned by the Rausing family.

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney and his wife are in 11th place with £780 million.

Retail tycoon Peter Jones, who rose to fame on TV show Dragon's Den, takes 20th place with £475 million, which is no change from last year.

The De Haan name has been well known in the Shepway district for decades.

Sidney De Haan was the founder of the Saga companies, targeting the over 50s market, which was later passed onto his sons Roger and Peter in 1984 when he retired.

The company was sold in 2004.

Roger and Sidney both set up the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust in 1978 and have been the driving force behind The Creative Quarter in Folkestone and the new-build Three Hills Sports Park in Cheriton Road.

Roger bought Folkestone Harbour for £11 million and is responsible for the mass redevelopment that is planned and is taking place over the next 20 years.

The once derelict seafront is set to have up to 1,000 homes, open spaces, and up to 10,000 sq ft of retail space.
