A green Volkswagen car has crashed into a tree early this morning, leaving two men with "serious injuries."

It happened at 4.38am in Bouverie Road West, next to the crossing at Sainsbury's.

Police say the men have been taken to hospital and that officers are still at the scene.

A small fuel spillage can be seen, along with damage to the tree and a lamppost smashed on the floor

The road has been closed and rush hour traffic is expected to build up in the area.

One witness who lives nearby said the noise of the crash was so loud it woke her household up.

It is understood the lamppost next to the tree has also fallen down.

Police tape has cordoned off the area

The fire service was also called, but Heather Heath, the crew manager said the firefighters had no involvement and just checked that the car wasn't on fire.

A police spokesman said: "Inquiries into the circumstances behind the collision are ongoing."

More as we get it.
