An escape room, also known as an escape game, is a game in which a team of players cooperatively discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time.

The goal is often to escape from the room.

Folkestone is already home to the Locked In escape room, which is currently closed due to Covid-19. Escape 60 previously opened in the town but has now closed.

Others in Kent can be found in Canterbury , Margate , Maidstone , Medway , Ashford , Faversham , Gravesend , Tunbridge Wells and Paddock Wood. And all have average five-star ratings on Tripadvisor .

The new Folkestone escape room will support historic The Leas Lift, which connects the town with the beach and was built in 1885 and is a very rare cliff funicular railway.

It is one of only three remaining water-balanced lifts in the UK but closed three years ago due to safety issues with the braking system.

Since then, the buildings, tracks and machinery have degraded further.

In 2019, the landmark was added to Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register, which helps safeguard it for the future.

The Folkestone Leas Lift Company CIC was set up as a trust campaigning for the future operation of the site.

This summer, The The Lift Cafe, opened in the Grade II-listed lower station .

It is understood an exhibition for the lift will also be included at the site of the new escape room.
