Renewed safety fears means the Road of Remembrance in Folkestone will remain closed longer than first expected following a landslip but is hoped it will reopen once an inspection finishes on Friday.

Engineers from Shepway District Council started clearing trees that were blocking the road on Wednesday.

It was hoped the road would reopen at some time today (Thursday).

But they remained concerned about the stability of the area and advised Kent Highways that the site should be re-examined before it can be reopened.

The matter has now been passed on to Kent Highways and a Kent County Council spokesman said an inspection is due to finish some time tomorrow (Friday) with the road reopening shortly after.

A cherry picker was hired to clear away the overhanging branches which was completed.

The land in question is privately owned but a spokesman for SDC said it wanted to assess the damage and establish what needed to be done to get the road open again as soon as possible.

The council is trying to contact the landowner but the engineers have deemed the gardens above the site of the landslip to be safe.
