Drivers could face higher parking costs as a council seeks to extend charges at two popular seafront car parks.

Members of Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC) want to implement the change at Sandgate Road Car Park and The Coastal Park Car Park.

It would mean drivers will be charged beyond the existing 6pm limit until 9pm at Sandgate Road and until 8pm at The Coastal Park car park.

It comes as council bosses say maintenance costs continue to climb, adding there has been a large demand for parking in the evening.

Formerly known as the Leas Cliff Hall car park, Sandgate Road car park is particularly popular due to its close proximity to the venue.

“We have seen a huge demand for parking in the evenings, especially when there are events at the Leas Cliff Hall and during the summer period,” a council spokesperson said.

“So, to continue providing the car parks in accordance with visitor demand, an extension in chargeable hours has been put forward to help with the increased costs.”

The current chargeable parking hours are 8am until 6pm for both car parks every day.

If given the green light, the new charges would come into force from April 1.

But, anyone with questions following the order or requiring further information, should contact FHDC Parking Services at the Civic Centre in Castle Hill Avenue.

Similarly, anyone who would like to make an objection or comment about the proposition should write to FHDC (Traffic Orders), Civic Centre, Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone, CT20 2QY or email traffic.orders@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk.

Any objections made must specify the grounds on which it is made and must be sent by Friday, February 23.

It comes as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are due to be installed at Sandgate Road car park. It means users will pay at the end of their stay.
