Desperate migrants have explained their reasons for trying to make the treacherous journey across the Channel - as the Prime Minister pledges to help Kent through the crisis.

Speaking to reporter Graham Stothard in Calais, asylum seekers from Afghanistan describe life at the French terminal, and why they are fleeing their own country for a better life in the UK.

Assad, who has been in Calais for the past two months, says he is determined to reach Britain - despite the many migrants who have been injured or killed attempting to make the journey.

It comes as David Cameron pledges to do "everything he can" to boost security in Calais and help Kent through the crisis.

Speaking after a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee in Westminster this morning, the Prime Minister said he was looking into the possibility of using Ministry of Defence land to park lorries and ease congestion caused by Operation Stack.

He said: "Here in Kent we need to do more to help lorry drivers and holidaymakers. We're going to do everything we can to reduce the disruption including using MoD land.

"This is going to be a difficult issue right across the summer. We rule nothing out in taking action to deal with this very serious problem."

Mr Cameron also pledged to take measures in Calais including putting in more fencing and sending in sniffer dogs to prevent migrants from storming the Channel Tunnel.

He added: "The situation is not acceptable and it is absolutely this government's priority to deal with it in any way we can."

The meeting came after more than 1,000 more migrants attempted to storm the Channel Tunnel overnight.
