Two main roads in Folkestone are closed from today for major roadworks.

Work is being carried out to Tontine Street and Churchill Avenue.

The work in Tontine Street is part of the scheme to make it a two-way street for buses, bicycles and taxis.

Tontine Street is closed this week

It is closed all this week from the junction with Tram Road for 75m north up the road around the cobbled area.

A diversion is in place along Tram Road, Southern Way, Dover Road, Canterbury Road, Black Bull Road, Foord Road, New Street and Bradstone Road.

As part of the work, which was finally agreed in September, the cobbles are being pulled up and replaced with tarmac. The road will reopen again on Friday, November 20.

The one-way scheme up to where the road is closed has been suspended to allow access and exit from Tontine Street. But waiting on the northern end of the road is prohibited.

Once the work is completed buses, taxis and cyclists will be able to travel down Tontine Street towards the harbour.

The whole scheme is expected to be completed in May after beginning on October 19.

Churchill Avenue closed every night until December 8

Night closures are in force on Churchill Avenue for the next three weeks between the junction with Cherry Garden Avenue and Park Farm Road.

The closures, which are in force between 8pm and 6am until Tuesday, December 8 - are for resurfacing works at M20 junction 13 at the Castle Hill bridge and interchange.

A diversion is in place for access to the M20 via Canterbury Road, Black Bull Road, Radnor Park Road, Cheriton Road to junction 12.

Kent Highways is warning that "delays are inevitable" and advise drivers use alternative routes for the duration of the work.
