Most of us will be enjoying winter nights indoors – but not Folkestone rower Marc Alderman, who will be rowing across the Atlantic with four fellow rowers.

It all came about in the bar a year ago following the National Coastal Rowing Championships in September 2012.

A few drinks later, Marc and his crewmates, from Worthing in West Sussex, had decided to take up the 3,000-mile challenge.

“We had a few drinks, it all seemed like such a great idea at the time and it’s sort of gone from there really.”

They are taking part in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge which sets off from Tenerife on December 2. The next time the crew will see land will be about five weeks later in Antigua.
