Part of Folkestone Harbour Line in Tram Road goes on market

A section of disused railway has gone on the market for £150,000.

Part of the former Folkestone Harbour Line, which runs parallel to Tram Road, is being sold by land owner Network Rail.

The sale relates to the section between Warren Road to the north and the junction with Beach Street to the south.

Over recent months, work has been carried out to clear the site, with some of the old track, sleepers and lineside equipment being removed and overgrown vegetation and litter cleared.

But some of the old track was left in place purposefully, say Network Rail, to "allow this to be a feature of any future scheme".

Questions about the future use of the land were raised after major renovation works were carried out on the track that runs along the neighbouring Harbour Arm.

The old station, railway line and signalling box were all revamped as part of the Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company's seafront masterplan, which includes shops, cafés, bars and 1,000 new homes along the town's front.

Visitors to the seafront are now able to walk through the former station, which has had seats and flowers installed, before making their way along the harbour arm.

And now the 2.14 acre site along Tram Road has been put on the market with Batcheller Monkhouse, an agent based in Tunbridge Wells.

Work has been carried out on the site in recent months to clear litter and vegetation

The sales particulars states: "The former railway line has been cleared of overgrown vegetation however for the most part the railway tracks remain in situ.

"To the south of the site the railway line rises above the surrounding roads and included within the site is a raised section of red brick railway bridge."

Offers in excess of £150,000 will be considered, although the agent says "interested parties should also state what their intended use for the property is going to be".

The sales documents reveals that the site has been identified in the local plan as being a potential cycle and pedestrian route, but says no planning applications have been submitted recent years.

The purchaser of the site will be liable for the future repair and upkeep of the raised bridge section of the track.

In February this year the Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company said it is unlikely they will be behind any future development of the area.

Speaking today, after news that it is now on sale, a spokesman for the company said this is still the case.

Folkestone and Hythe District Council said they will considering whether the site would be a viable investment.

A council spokesperson said: "At this stage, the council are considering whether there is an interest for this site, but clearly there are significant financial implications were the council to consider acquiring this site."

Interested parties have until July to submit their offers.

A spokesman for agent Batcheller Monkhouse said: "It’s an exciting property to be involved with given its heritage and position within the centre of the town."

Mark Ellerby, senior sponsor at Network Rail, said: "Earlier this year we cleared the disused Folkestone Harbour branch line of overgrown vegetation, flytipping and redundant railway equipment.

"We have now placed the site on the market and have asked interested parties to submit bids by the end of July.

"It will ultimately be up to the new owners to decide on the site’s future, but we have left some of the old track in place to allow it to be a feature of any new use."
