A playing field in Hawkinge has been cordoned off by police after a child discovered an unexploded bomb.

Police were called to a field close to Haven Drive at 5.32pm last night after a child using a metal detector came across a 10 inch long shell.

Police cordoned off the area and the Ministry of Defence's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team attended the scene.

The device, described as a 10-inch long shell, was taken away by the EOD and the cordon was removed by police this morning.

It is the second discovery in the Hawkinge area this year. We reported in January how two friends with a metal detector found unexploded bombs in Hawkinge - and took them back home.
