Folkestone firefighters tackle third floor flat fire in Tontine Street after chip fryer catches fire

A young woman has been left with burns to her face and arms today after a fire broke out in Folkestone.

The blaze started when a deep fat fryer caught alight at a third floor flat in Tontine Street.

Fire crews were called to the incident at around 1.45pm and discovered the flames had erupted after the woman, believed to be aged 21, put the fryer under the tap.

She suffered minor burns to her face and arms.

Firefighters said the kitchen suffered minor smoke and fire damage and that the fryer had been destroyed.

They also issued a safety message about what to do in this situation.

Officer Trevor Glass said: "The message here is get out, call us and stay out.

"Don't try and do it yourself. It is extremely dangerous for individuals to attempt to extinguish fires."
