A recording has been released of the moment a Folkestone woman realised she had become a millionaire on the National Lottery.

Marjorie Tyrie called a lottery helpline after receiving an email, thinking she had won £1,000 - only to discover it was £1 million!

Marjorie and husband Alan - who had been made redundant only weeks earlier - won the money on the Lotto Millionaire Raffle last month.

Mrs Tyrie said at the time: “This year may have started a little rocky, but my gosh it soon picked up.”

The couple, both 58, entered the draw of Saturday, January 23.

Mrs Tyrie, steward at Cheriton Oddfellows Social Club in Cheriton, plays two lines of the same numbers on the lotto every week between coming home from bingo and going to work.

When she watched that week’s winning numbers announced on TV she assumed there was no win because she could only see one matching number.

Mr Tyrie returned home from golf to hear the stunning news. But the pair had a quick celebratory cup of tea before Mrs TyrieMarjorie left for work.

Mrs Tyrie intends to keep her job, but her husband has suggested he may retire.

She said: “We have always worked hard for everything we have –- whether buying our own home or putting our son though university – so we really know the value of hard work.

“Even after Alan was made redundant, within a week he had found another contracting job, which he actually started the morning after we discovered the win.

“Welding is a physically demanding job, so it’ll be nice for him to hang up his welder’s mask.”

The pair are in no hurry to move from their home of 30 years but will pay off the mortgage.

Marjorie said: “We’ are going to take our time planning our future. We want to make sure that we do all the things we always dreamt of and still have plenty left over to help our two boys and give us a good retirement.”
