A MONTH-OLD baby had a lucky escape when reckless vandals shattered a car’s sunroof from a bridge over the M20 motorway.

They dropped an object from above the London-bound carriageway at Ashford. It smashed throught the glass roof of a Seat Cordoba narrowly missing the baby.

The child's mother Amanda Thake said: “It was like an explosion going off. We were so shocked. These stupid people could have killed my baby.”

The car is fitted with a sliding visor beneath the sunroof which contained the broken glass that otherwise would have cascaded onto baby Renee in the front seat.

Renee was the last infant of 2005 born at Ashford's William Harvey Hospital.

Amanda and her partner Kevin Tunley, 42, of St Michael’s Street, Folkestone, were travelling to Ashford when the vandals struck. Damage to the car has been put at between £400 and £600.

“Whoever did this was totally thoughtless and completely uncaring. We could have crashed," added Amanda.

Ch Insp Stuart Kehily praised Mr Tunley for keeping cool and not allowing the incident to affect his driving.

He said: “This could have been a very serious incident had the driver not kept his head or the internal shutter not been pulled across.

“Throwing missiles from motorway bridges is reckless and can cause serious injuries.”
