Harbour side kiosk owners are “delighted” after being granted a licence to sell alcohol every day of the week.

Shepway District Council (SDC) on Tuesday granted permission for Folkestone’s Sunny Sands kiosk on the Stade to sell wines and beer, providing they are consumed on the premises.

It comes after residents called on SDC to throw out the plans because of fears over antisocial behaviour.

Licensing sub-committee members voted unanimously in favour of the proposals at SDC’s Civic Centre council chambers, meaning the kiosk will serve alcohol from 10am-8.30pm seven days a week.

Married Richard Ruebsamen and Tonei (correct) Jackson are the company’s co-directors.

Mrs Jackson told the council chamber: “We are a seasonal business so for four months a year we will be selling it, there will be no hard liquor.

“This has come about from the public asking ‘do you sell lager?’

“We will operate an age 25 plus age scheme.”

Mr Ruebsamen went on how the couple wish to give visitors the chance to “enjoy drinks on the terrace over-looking the sea”, but will be vigilant in refusing to sell alcohol to intoxicated people.

On approval, committee chairman Michael Lyons laid out a raft of measures the couple must follow.

Drinks must be served in plastic containers, CCTV installed on the outside of the premises and the licensing law “ensconced” in their memory.

He said: “Well done, you have got your license, but the licensing law must be ensconced in your memory.

“Alcohol must be consumed on the premises.

“We think it’s worth you putting up some close circuit television.”

Speaking after the meeting, Mrs Jackson, who was in a buoyant mood said: “We are delighted.”

It comes after their licensing application was met last month with a frosty public reception, however, the emergency and environmental services made no objections ahead of the meeting.

The kiosk will continue to sell confectionery such as sweets, chocolate, ice cream and other refreshments.
