A body has been washed ashore on a Kent beach.

Police were called at 10.30am to reports of a person was found dead on the seafront at Folkestone.

Sunny Sands beach was sealed off while officers investigated the death - and the man has since been identified.

The cordon has since been taken down and police have left the scene.

A spokesman said: "Police were alerted just before 10.30am about the discovery of a man's body on the beach at Sunny Sands in Folkestone.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and police are now away from the scene. The man has not yet been identified."

Witnesses in the area reported seeing at least three police cars and a couple of ambulances this morning.

The discovery is not believed to be in connection with the rescue of two women in the harbour area last night.

The coastguard helicopter and police were called at around 9pm to reports several people had been swept out to sea but were winched to safety.

A Kent Police spokesman said officers were called to the area last night following "concern for the welfare of a woman" around Sunny Sands beach.

She was taken to hospital for treatment.

A statement from Littlestone Lifeboat Station said it was called to four people in the water last night.

It added: "Three of the people managed to get safely back to shore and a fourth was airlifted by the the search and rescue helicopter from Lydd and flown to the William Harvey Hospital."

The crew from Dover were also called to take part in the rescue.

Ambulance spokesman Rich Airey said paramedics were called by police just after 10.30am.

He said: "We attended with two ambulances and one car but were cleared from the scene soon after arrival. It's now with the police."
