Two bogus callers were sent packing when they failed to show ID to a householder.
The woman in Sellindge also told the men to get out when they could not produce paperwork for the job they claimed they were sent for.
They called on the woman on Tuesday saying that they were from the council.
They said that they were working on the house next door and needed to turn down her water pressure.
The men came into her house, looked under her sink and said she had a leak and would charge her £25 to fix it.
She then asked for identification and paperwork, they said they had none and she told then to leave. They did not return.
A spokesman for Kent County Council Trading Standards said: “People working for the local authority will always carry identification with them.
“They will not offer to carry out a repair on your home unless previously arranged and they will show identification before entering any premises.”
Trading Standards warns people to always check identification before letting anyone into your home.
Genuine callers will not mind waiting.
Don’t rely on telephone numbers printed on the identification but use those published on, for example, your water bill, the telephone director or the company’s website.
If you have concerns or have been contacted by these men called the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0845 040506.
