After the car was brought safely to a stop near the Channel Tunnel, the driver was informed the vehicle had been stolen from the West Sussex area a few months ago.

It is understood the car had been leant out for a test drive, but was never returned.

A police spokesman confirmed the motorist, a woman, was not treated as a suspect and was not arrested.

A statement from the force on Twitter read: "A team effort from Kent Police RPU and Tac Ops has lead to a stolen car being safely stopped and recovered after being spotted on the M20 by officers.

"The car was stolen in West Sussex when someone test drove it and didn't return!"
