Cub leader faces child sex charges

A 64-year-old cub leader appeared before magistrates at Folkestone today accused of a total of 19 sex offences against children.

David Hopkins, of Skeete Road, Lyminge, near Folkestone, had earlier been arrested in connection with a number of allegations by adults who, as children, attended his cub pack.

It is alleged the assaults occurred between 1961 and 1989. Mr Hopkins was remanded in custody until a plea and directions hearing at Maidstone Crown Court next month.

After today's hearing, Det Chief Insp Chris Hogben, of Kent Police, said: "The investigation team are currently trying to trace a number of children who attended the Hawkinge Cub Group between 1973 and 1989."

Anyone who has information they feel could assist the inquiry is asked to contact Folkestone police on 01303 289132.
