Flames struck a bungalow after a dishwasher caught light.
The kitchen was 20% destroyed by the blaze and firefighters had to tackle it wearing breathing apparatus.
Folkestone Fire Station watch manager John Howard said: “On arrival we found that the property was full of smoke and there was a well developed fire in the kitchen.”
Fire crews were called to the bungalow in Cherry Garden Lane, Folkestone, just before 7.15pm yesterday.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes of receiving the 999 call, put out the flames with a hosereel jet and cleared the smoke with a special fan.
The rest of the bungalow had smoke damage but the occupant, an elderly woman, got out safely after being alerted by her smoke alarm.
A thermal imaging camera was used to check for fire spread and firefighters replaced two smoke detectors. They also gave safety advice to neighbours.
One fire engine from Folkestone and another from Dover had been called out.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging householders to get a free safety check on their home with smoke detectors fitted for free where needed.
