A MOTORCYCLIST is still in intensive care today after a horror crash at Capel near Folkestone yesterday afternoon.

Eleven firefighters from Folkestone used both hydraulic lifting equipment and their bare hands to roll a car off the 34-year-old man who suffered multiple injuries.

The motorcyclist has not yet been named but he is believed to be a school teacher in the Dover area.

He collided with the blue Vauxhall Astra. Both vehicles were travelling towards Dover, but the car driver was turning right towards Abbot’s Cliff to walk his dog. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike into the path of the car.

Leading firefighter Mike Godden said: “Within two minutes we had used the airbags and sheer brute force to get the car off him and roll it to one side. Red Watch did a fantastic job. If he had any chance of surviving, he’s had the best chance.”

The emergency services were called at 2.34pm to New Dover Road close to the Royal Oak pub just outside the village. Fire crews were on the scene within three minutes and moved the car to allow paramedics to start work.

The Kent Air Ambulance was called and the fire crews cut fencing so the casualty could be carried to the helicopter.

Today Peter Jones, spokesman for Ashford's William Harvey Hospital, described the man's condition as stable.

The car driver was treated for shock at the scene. The road was closed while crash investigation officers recorded details. Police are now appealing for witnesses.
