A year ago pub landlord Joe Daniels turned up for work at the Red Cow.
Hours later, his partner Milena Goff found the 58-year-old unresponsive inside the building, with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. Police recovered a gun from the property.
Twelve months on and Kent Police is renewing its appeal to trace the Liverpudlian’s killer, who has been at large since the attack just before 11.30am on November 22.
Kent Police’s murder probe has seen one suspect, a 23-year-old man from Canterbury, arrested and released earlier this year.
He remains under police investigation.
Meanwhile officers continue to appeal for dashcam footage and witnesses who were near the 17th century bar.
Speaking after the incident Ms Goff described Mr Daniels as “humorous” and knowing his suspected killer walks free “makes (her) feel ill.”
Milena, an ex-Canterbury Christ Church University student, said: “We had some brilliant times at the Red Cow, it was like an extended family, I’m absolutely devastated.
“Unfortunately someone murdered my husband and someone is accountable.
“Knowing someone is still at large makes me feel ill.
“I want to appeal to people to make sure they don’t forget what happened.
“It needs to be kept in people's memories. Someone out there knows something about what happened that day.
“I just want someone to come forward and at least myself and Joe’s family can have some form of closure.”
Shortly after Mr Daniels’ death his sister Ann Flaherty posted a tribute on his Facebook page.
Ms Flaherty wrote: "Can't believe the news we got today my big brother taken so cruelly, we are all numb, so glad we got to see you few weeks back enjoying a good knees up.
"My heart is broken. Sleep well my Bro Joe our dad will look after you 'til we meet again."
Eight months after the Liverpudlian’s death, new landlords Craft Union Pub Company, opened the Red Cow’s doors for business.
The décor was revamped inside with new flooring and brighter colours.
The outside was brushed up with grey and black paint and a new sign was placed on the front.
Officers continue to appeal for information.
Witnesses or anyone with information that has not yet been in touch can call Kent Police’s appeal line on 01303 289600, quoting reference 22-0453.
