Frustration was boiling over tonight after the implementation of Operation Stack led to horrendous delays on Kent's roads.

Drivers and their relatives have told KentOnline of the huge delays they have encountered whilst trying to travel on the coast-bound stretch of the M20.

Phase two of Operation Stack was introduced early this morning due to high levels of traffic at the Channel Tunnel following the weekend's fire and will remain in place into Thursday.

On Twitter, Lynne Crisp tweeted her husband had been stuck on the motorway for four hours - and was unlikely to make it home to until midnight.

Ellie Miller said her journey from Sidcup to Whitstable took two and a half hours instead of the usual 50 minutes.

Lisa Lomas said: "It took me 3 hours to do Maidstone to Sittingbourne and back again. Ridiculous!"

And lorry driver Anthony Down added: "It's about time a proper holding area is built for us drivers with facilities. Even prisoners don't have to wait seven hours to use a toilet."

Comments left on this website have hit out at the lack of information to help motorists avoid the problems.

'Eds' wrote: "Absolutely appallingly handled. Signs as far away as the M6 warning of Stack, but when you get close there's nothing to suggest which lane you want to be in if you want to get to a certain area.

"No police assisting or directing people or even hanging around at Junction 7 to prevent people cutting in or blocking the slip road for A249 south...

"It took me over four hours to get to Ashford from Maidenhead and I knew when the best time was to leave the motorway and what alternative route to take. For someone less experienced it must be absolutely baffling, potentially scary, especially if low on fuel, no water, have a baby in the car etc."

'CRR' described the situation as an 'absolute joke' adding: "I came off the M25 to the M2, to avoid all this only to find signs telling passengers to use the M2, and not the M20 for Dover and Euro tunnel. Cheers!

"It took me three hours to get to Sittingbourne from the M25 at junction 2. normally a 20 to 30 minute journey. The whole area has become congested, why the hell dont they park lorries and freight off the road in a park somewhere."

Writing on our Facebook page, lorry driver Robbie Gash said: "I've seen Operation Stack loads of times, today was the worst I've ever seen.

"I blame Kent Police and the Highways Agency for very slow action in getting the lorries into the holding area between junctions 8-9.

"This caused utter chaos with local traffic also trying to come off at junction 8 causing gridlock.

"When driving London-bound from Ashford there was miles of empty space. Better organisation would've prevented today's fiasco."

Kent Police said tonight that Operation Stack would last into Thursday, adding drivers should 'leave plenty of time of find alternative routes.'
