Passengers tell of Eurostar snow woes

Passengers have spoken out after being trapped in the Channel Tunnel for hours - with only iPod lights to see by.

Hundreds of Eurostar rail passengers were blocked for hours in the Channel Tunnel through the night on Monday because of the severe weather.

Two Paris-to-London trains took three hours to complete the 20-minute journey through the tunnel - because of technical problems on the tracks caused by the snow.

Both trains pulled into St Pancras in London after midnight - more than five hours behind schedule.

Now passengers have spoken of their ordeal at being trapped in the trains with no light or air-conditioning.

James Gourley, of Watford, said: "I was on the train that took eight hours to get to St Pancras after a power failure.

"We were stuck in the tunnel without light or aircon for hours, with only iPod screen lights to illuminate us!

"Eventually the Eurotunnel emergency lighting was turned on, but the train heated up to ridiculous levels."

A Kentonline reader, named only as Nick from London, said: "I was on the 17.13 train from Paris that had a power failure while in the tunnel, and was stranded for four hours."

A Eurostar spokesman said the bad weather had caused technical problems on the fleet. He said "There was very bad weather on Monday but Eurostar still managed to run 90 per cent of its services. There was a delay of up to one hour on services for most of the day but there were three major delays and two of them were trains inside the tunnel."

While on the train, food and drink was made available to all passengers and once they had arrived at their destination, accommodation and taxis were provided where possible for people who had missed connecting services.

All those on the train would be entitled to a full refund and a complimentary return ticket in compensation.
