A police spokesman confirmed the incident involved "a distressed man who was standing on the bridge above the A20".

The roads were closed "as a precaution" to help officers ensure that the man was brought to safety.

A Kent Highways spokesman said at 10.30am the road through the Roundhill Tunnel on the A20 had reopened and delays were beginning to clear.

Drivers were caught in tailbacks beyond junction 13 of the M20 coastbound carriageway.
