Police warn residents to guard against metal thieves

THIEVES who steal lead and copper piping from homes and buildings are putting people’s lives at risk, police have warned.

A house in Folkestone was at risk of explosion last night after assailants ripped out copper from the gas mains to the property.

The residents awoke to a strong smell of gas, and found that lead flashing from their conservatory had also been removed.

The theft is the latest incident that police believe is linked to the escalating value of metals such as lead and copper.

The buying price for lead has doubled in the past 12 months, making it attractive to thieves who then exchange it for cash at scrap metal dealers.

People are now encourage to be extra vigilant and look out for anyone acting suspiciously, and property owners and residents are advised to examine their security.
