AN ALTERNATIVE jubilee event for transsexuals and transvestites which was to take place in Folkestone has been cancelled - because the organisers are fearful of homophobic attacks.
Two of the organisers of Queens on the Leas, Sue Shepherd, who runs Lacies underwear shop in Dover Road, Folkestone, and Jennifer Brian, of Ramsgate, called the event off after speaking with a community liaison officer at Folkestone police station.
PC Cronin told them Folkestone, and in particular The Leas, had seen a number of homophobic incidents and that they needed to consider the safety of those attending and members of the public.
The Kentish Express exclusively revealed plans for Queens on the Leas back in April.
Sue Shepherd said: "There have been incidents and so we didn't think it would be safe to go-ahead. In light of the hooliganism element present we seem to have no alternative but to cancel. It is a shame as a lot of people were interested in taking part.
"We will put notices on the Internet telling people the event has been cancelled and not to go to The Leas. Although we hadn't set a precise date there seemed to be a widespread belief that this was to be held over this jubilee weekend, but we warn people not to gather."
The Folkestone businesswoman said she may organise an event for next year, giving more time to liaise with the police and Shepway District Council. She added: "We need to make The Leas a fit place for events such as Queens on the Leas. During our time of organising we have been amazed by how many people rally wanted Folkestone to have such an outdoor, colourful event."
The organisers had hoped to attract transsexuals and transvestites from across Europe for the event. It was hoped those attending could enjoy picnics on The Leas while listening to music played by a drag DJ from the bandstand.
This week community liaison officer PC Mick Cronin said: "I have spoken to the organisers and this won't now go ahead, although they hope to hold an alternative event in October at private premises. I think they have made a wise decision in cancelling and all credit to them for doing that. If they do plan an event next year I would hope to work with them on it."
