Sadness as The Wishing Well gift shop in Folkestone set to close after 40 years

Customers have expressed their sadness after bosses announced an “iconic” store is set to shut after 40 years in a town centre.

Owners of The Wishing Well in Folkestone, which is a gift shop specialising in cards and stationery, have confirmed it will be closing its doors for the final time next month.

The Sandgate Road store and the two flats above were sold at auction with Clive Emson last week for £460,000.

Bosses say the shop will be closing down in July, with a half-price sale now on.

“Thank you to all our loyal customers who have supported the shop for the last 40 years,” they wrote on social media.

“Call in and see us to stock up before we close - we look forward to seeing you!”

Many people have been reminiscing about the times they have visited The Wishing Well over the decades.

Writing in the comments, Ian Johnstone said: “Ah no – it was only just yesterday I went past there and thought to myself that shop has been around for a long time.

“Another Folkestone icon on the way out but I have to be honest and say that I haven't been in there for years.”

“I always loved this shop,” Tina Rowley commented.

“My children and grandchildren were always fascinated with the shop front.

“I will miss this shop and their great selection of cards.”

The announcement has also left many in Folkestone concerned over the future of the high street, with yet another mainstay set to close.

Mark Hounsell wrote: “I remember going there as a kid before Christmas time.

“The internet has killed one more shop and I am as guilty as most.”

Manda Jane went on: “I love The Wishing Well. Our town is slowly going.”

In April, customers of The Eleto Chocolate Cafe in Rendezvous Street expressed their sadness after the sudden closure.

The venue, which also has a branch in Canterbury, served coffee and food during the day and regularly hosted music events in the evening.

Meanwhile, businesses closer to the seafront continue to go from strength to strength.

A new bakery is opening in the Old High Street, while Folkestone harbour arm’s biggest ever venue - The Board Room - is now welcoming customers.

The latter has a capacity of 100 people and is described as a "chilled-out beer cafe".
