Cavells - new Mediterranean, Greek, Lebanese and Syrian restaurant - opens at Folkestone Harbour Arm by team behind The Big Greek Bus

Historic railway wagons have been converted into a new Mediterranean restaurant at a popular seaside attraction.

Cavells has opened its doors to become the latest addition to Folkestone Harbour Arm’s waterfront.

Situated inside a pair of vans dating back to 1919, which were formerly used for train passengers’ luggage and mail, the vehicles have been restored and converted into the new eatery.

It also sits in the famed spot of the now-closed Big Greek Bus - with the team behind it the one opening the new site.

The iconic blue vehicle served as a Greek restaurant for eight years before closing last October and being towed away in the winter.

The vehicles which house Cavells comprise two restored parcel and miscellaneous vans (PMVs).

The site will be run by the same family team now offering an eastern Mediterranean dining experience with Lebanese and Syrian influences.

Manager Bernie Sullivan says Cavells will provide diners with "a relaxed, lounge-style dining experience".

The 63-year-old explained: “It’s very exciting.

"As one of the founding members of the growing food and drink scene which has given Folkestone Harbour its identity, we are so delighted to have taken our business to the next level with the support of Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company (FHSDC).

"The introduction of these carriages means we can offer a much more extensive menu to our loyal customers, as well as offering them somewhere to take in the great views right throughout the year."

Visitors will able to oversee views of the coastline towards the White Cliffs of Dover.

They will also be offered a new menu with influences from Greece, Lebanon and Syria and dishes including Shawarma style lamb and fattoush, plus a mixture of hot meze, salads and flatbreads.

The new site is adjacent to the Shesells Seashells restaurant, which is also housed inside train carriages.

FHSDC's Paulo Kingston-Correia says Cavells has all the ingredients to succeed.

The company's general manager explained: “It’s been a pleasure to work with the team who first brought The Big Greek Bus to our site to develop something really special.

"As some of the oldest tenants with some of the loyalist customers, we’re really excited to see people get to experience this fresh new offering."

The restaurant is open from 12pm to 8pm from Monday to Thursday, closing an hour later on Fridays and Saturdays.

It will also trade from 12pm to 6pm on Sundays.

Cavells is the latest addition to the Arm following the arrival of The Board Room in the spring.

Featuring a “chilled-out beer cafe” with a host of games including darts and shuffleboard, it is now the largest venue at the coastal attraction with up to 100 people able to enjoy the venue.

Meanwhile, in May computer-generated images (CGI) were revealed to show how a Covent Garden-style covered food hall could be created at the tourist hotspot as part of the wider redevelopment of the area.

The proposals would see the food and drink “plaza”, The Goods Yard, completely transformed.
