A CROWD of 10,000 is expected to turn out for Folkestone's noisy and lively carnival procession on Saturday, called Charivari Day. The event, which aims for a Notting Hill atmosphere, is now in its sixth year and about 600 people will be in the procession, along with four street bands.
Extravagant and colourful costumes are made for the day in schools, at the George's House art gallery in Folkestone and in workplaces. This year the theme is world orchestra. The fun starts at 2.30pm, with the procession setting off from The Stade, opposite the harbour. It makes its way to the town centre and then on to The Leas. There will be music at the bandstand until 6pm and then families are invited to the amphitheatre in the Coastal Park, in Lower Sandgate Road, to hear a Salsa band and a group called Bloco Electro.
There is still time to make a costume and to be part of the event. Costume making workshops are taking place at George's House on Wednesday July 17 and Thursday July 18 from 3-8pm. A £1 donation is welcomed. Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. For more details phone 01303 244533.
