A bakery offering the promise of a taste of Italy has opened its doors in a historic seaside building.

The new confectionary shop, Let’s Amore, has taken over the iconic setting in the Old Signal Box at Folkestone’s harbour.

It comes after Bobbies Bakehouse closed its doors in January after almost four years of trading at the popular tourist hotspot.

Let’s Amore is a Sicilian bakery owned and operated by locals Juliette Golding and Tony Sammito and opened on Saturday, June 17.

The site will serve items such as, imported Italian coffee, aperitivo, Aperol spritz, arancini, Sicilian style croissants, cannoli and focaccia sandwiches.

The menu promises to “delight any fan of quick Italian bites” and claims “the star of the show has to be the focaccia sandwiches”.

After an extensive restoration job by Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company, the Old Signal Box was opened to the public for the first time in 2019.

Since then, it has been given a new lease of life as a destination cafe with views across Folkestone’s working harbour and along the old platforms of the restored Harbour Station.

The Signal Box dates back to 1915 and was transformed as part of the seafront masterplan, which includes shops, cafes, bars and 1,000 new homes along the town's waterfront.

Paulo Kingston-Correia, general manager of Folkestone Harbour and Seafront Development Company, said: “We’re delighted to see the Signal Box open to the public once again.

“With 10 brand new food and drink businesses opening in the past year alone, we’re proud to once again be providing an opportunity to local businesses owners who have managed to bring an entirely new and unique offering to our site.”

The bakery will be open on Mondays and then Thursdays through to Sundays from 8:30am to 5pm.

Folkestone residents have already taken a shine to the new eatery.

One person commented on Facebook: “A great little place! Very friendly, amazing food and great coffee and drinks selection.”

“I went yesterday and the sandwich was very nice. So to was the pistachio cream cake,” another added.
