Folkestone’s Hugh Bernard showed his class in front of the live TV cameras on Monday night.

The 18-year-old took three wickets for England under-19s in their three-wicket win against Australia at the County Ground in Derby.

The Kent paceman (3-47) opened the bowling with Saqib Mahmood and helped restrict the tourists to 226-6 in their 50 overs.

Daniel Lawrence then hit 119 from 103 balls to put England in control before a tumble of wickets set up a nervy finish live on Sky Sports.

Bernard said: "It got a bit tight towards the end but it’s brilliant to level the series after going 1-0 down and then having the second game washed out.

"In my first spell I bowled quite well. You’ve just got to forget the cameras are there and act like it’s a normal day at the office."

The five-match series is now back in the balance ahead of matches at Leicester tomorrow (Thursday) and Worcester on Saturday.

Bernard said: "In the first game, we didn’t get enough runs on the board and that was it but I’d say we’ve got a better team than the Australians. We’re looking forward to the World Cup and we’ve got a team that can win it.

"We’ve got 13 more games to go now including a tour of Sri Lanka and a Tri Series.

"We want to win this series but ultimately, we want to put in 13 high-class performances going into the World Cup."
