Folkestone Invicta are top of the league and pulling in the crowds – no wonder boss Neil Cugley is thrilled.

Four wins and a draw from their first five games have Cugley’s side a point clear at the summit of the Isthmian Premier.

Their three home games have attracted a total of 1,504 spectators to the BuildKent Stadium and Folkestone are the division’s joint-top scorers with 13 goals.

Cugley said: “It is exciting, I can’t deny that.

“You don’t know how it’s going to go and that’s why you have the friendlies.

“It’s sometimes nice to have a couple of not-so-good games because you can get your thoughts across to the players and that’s what’s happened.

“I’m very lucky that I’ve got Roland Edge and Micheal Everitt alongside me, who put that across very well to the players.

“The players are enjoying their football and it’s not just this year, it’s been the two years before that.

“To get in the play-offs and only just miss out last year by one point, it shows we’re in a good place.”

Folkestone travel to Horsham on Saturday as the league’s two remaining unbeaten sides go head-to-head.

Cugley said: “We’ll just carry on what we’re doing, I don’t think we change too much.

“We’re not a team to worry about other teams too much, we get on and do what we want to do and if we do that, we’re hard to beat.

“We kept a settled squad in the summer and that must help. That’s why we’ve done well over the last three years – it hasn’t changed much.

“We’re not a club to bring in loads of players and that shows in how we play. It’s definitely an easier game when you know your own strengths as a team and individually.

“We’ve got a lot of pace up there, a lot of energy and we’ve scored goals late in games. For the first time in a long time, we had a very strong bench last weekend and that can help at this time of year.”

Finn O’Mara (ankle) could return next weekend, while Ian Draycott (wrist) sees a specialist early next month with a view to having his cast removed.

Cugley said: “That will take me up to a squad of 17 and that’ll be nice. We were able to move it around on Saturday and Monday a little bit.

“It’s not a big squad, 17, and with a couple of injuries it soon goes down to 15 but it’s a good mix.”
