Club captain Callum Davies has been hailed as the unsung hero of Folkestone’s superb season so far.

The 25-year-old defender has played more games than any other outfield player at the club this season.

Davies, who came through Gillingham’s youth system, has shown his pedigree since joining from Maidstone in 2017.

Manager Neil Cugley said: “If you look at Callum Davies, who I think has been our best player all season, he’s the only one who’s really played any League football and it sometimes does show.

“He’s been outstanding and he’s a good captain as well. He deserves a lot of credit for where we are in the league.

“He’s a good lad and his quality has shone through in the sense of how consistent he is.

“Last season he started slowly because had a bad ankle injury but this season he’s been fit and he’s been excellent.

“He’s an unsung hero and you can see he’s played at a higher standard.”

Davies made 39 first-team appearances for Gills between 2010 and 2014 and had loan spells at Lewes, Thurrock, Dover, Bromley and Eastleigh.

Cugley believes he can play higher again but hopes he’ll stay put for the time being.

He said: “With his job, I think he’s happy at Folkestone. Part-time football suits his lifestyle.

“We’re delighted with where we are, the whole club. To think where we were a few years ago, to where we are now, it’s a great achievement for everybody.

“It’s been hard work but we’ve got to be very proud of what’s gone on at the club, both on and off the pitch.”

Folkestone beat Kingstonian 3-0 on Tuesday night to go third in Bostik Premier.

Joe Taylor came off the bench to score twice and Ian Draycott got the other as Invicta moved level on points with Billericay and Margate, and just one behind new leaders Dulwich.
