Tom Millard was the standout performer for Folkestone Running Club during the British Masters Athletic Federation’s 5K virtual relay championship last week.

Millard, who recently transferred from the South Kent Harriers, was 13th overall in a field that included elite marathon runner Paul Martelletti.

The federation is for athletes 35 and older and the club entered teams in the M35-44 category (six to score) and M45-54 (four to score) for the virtual race.

Millard finished with a time of 15mins 12secs.

Folkestone RC finished in 24th place out of more than 80 clubs in the national competition.

There was also a fantastic result for Derek Matcham, breaking the 17 minute barrier, running 5k in a time of 16:48.

Also competing for the club were David Gillett (17:29, M40), Ian McGilloway (17:35, M45), Nick Steele (18:04, M35), Phil Hoyland (18:21, M35), Rob Collier (19:25, M45), Tim Warren (20:02, M45) and Darren Crew (20:44, M50).

Four members, meanwhile, spent last weekend running around the clock.

From 8am on the Saturday until Sunday morning Marie Brazier, Gary Brazier, Mark Weight, Tara Baker and Folkestone Running Club newcomer Kate Clipstone ran one mile every hour for the whole 24 hours.

Brazier said it was “mentally tough as well as physically,” adding: “As the night went on and I got tired it was harder to get out of the door.”

Baker and Weight mixed things up by having five different routes that they used throughout the event. Fuelling was difficult too. Brazier ate little and often, with Weight getting by on pizza.

Baker commented that is was “a good experience and a great challenge.”
