Danny Lye has spoken about his decision to call time on his football career.

The 32-year-old joined Hythe Town in October but had made only six appearances for Scott Porter’s side when he announced his retirement last week.

Lye, who won promotion with Maidstone United last season, has played all over Kent but now he’s hung his boots up for the last time.

He said: "I was losing interest because of my work and family commitments. When I signed for Hythe, it was to see if I was going to enjoy it but midweeks were killing me.

"I wasn’t enjoying it, the travelling and things like that. The body aches a bit more now and I was having to swap between seeing my family, working and playing football."

Business at Lye’s steel company in Gillingham has been brisk and his football commitments were increasingly conflicting with life as a father.

He said: "You have to go away when the season’s finished and I’ve been doing that since I was 12 or 13. It rules your life.

"My kids are getting older and I have to plan holidays, to go away in August and that means I miss pre-season or the start of the season."
