Joint-manager James Rogers has big ambitions for Lydd Town in the FA Vase.

The Lydders host FC Elmstead from the league below in the Second Qualifying Round this Saturday (3pm).

Rogers, 38, has enjoyed plenty of success in his playing career, including a run of six promotions in nine years.

But he’s never been to Wembley and knows there’s a chance to change that in the Vase.

“The final’s at Wembley and you don’t get many opportunities to play there,” said Rogers.

“I’ve never been there - most players in non-league haven’t.

“We’ll be taking the game seriously on Saturday.

“FC Elmstead are in the league below but they’re a half-decent team from what I hear.

“But if we turn up, with the players we’ve got, we should beat them. That’s how confident I am.

“That’s not being disrespectful to the opposition, I just believe in what we’ve got and we look a handful going forward.”

Lydd, edged 2-1 by Snodland in the Southern Counties East Premier Division last Wednesday, won 7-3 against Meridian VP in the Kent Senior Trophy First Round on Saturday.

They trailed 1-0 and 2-1 but cruised through, helped by two goals apiece for Johan ter Horst and Luke Burdon.

Midfielder Billy Robbins also struck on an impressive first start, along with Robbie Dolan and Mo Camara.

“The boys came back into it after we went 2-1 down and we played them off the park for long periods,” said Rogers, who handed a debut to new centre-back Jahmahl King.

“We were 6-2 up at half-time and I did say I wanted more goals but I’ve been involved in games like that where you have a lot of the ball and it becomes too easy.

“That crept in during the second half and it became like a training game. You’ve got a healthy lead against a side lower down and you take your foot off the pedal.

“You don’t kick on like you expect but I can’t moan at the lads.”

Ter Horst’s two goals were his first for Lydd in just his second appearance since signing on dual-registration from Ashford.

He’s due to be with the Lydders for a month.

“Johan’s been really good,” said Rogers.

“He’s come in with the right attitude, he’s always got a smile on his face and he’s settled in really well.

“He’s got a lot of minutes under his belt and there’s no sign of the injury he’s previously had.”
