Folkestone have an FA Trophy tie to negotiate this weekend but manager Neil Cugley doesn’t believe his team should even be playing in the competition.

Two-time Trophy winners Kingstonian are the visitors to the Fullicks Stadium for a first qualifying round tie which carries £2,700 prize money for the winners.

And Cugley admits that’s the only real motivation for Invicta, who haven’t reached the first round proper for nine years.

He said: "I’ve got to be honest, it’s just about the money, nothing else. Teams in Ryman South are not going to go far at all because it’s too strong a competition.

"There’s no chance of winning it and Ryman South teams and others at that standard, should be in the FA Vase.

"I’m not the only manager who thinks that.

"Even your chances of getting to the quarter-finals are so remote. It’s wrong."

Tunbridge Wells, who play one level below Folkestone in the Southern Counties East League, went all the way to the FA Vase final last season and played in front of almost 17,000 supporters at Wembley.

"It was great for Tunbridge Wells," Cugley said. "Deal Town won it (in 2000) and Herne Bay had a good run (to the semi-finals in 2012).

"But Ryman South sides are not going to do that."

Folkestone won 1-0 at Redhill on Tuesday night. Johan Ter Horst scored the only goal of the game, seven minutes before half-time.
