Folkestone Invicta suffered spot-kick heartache to hand Leatherhead victory in the Ryman League Division 1 South play-off final in front of nearly 1,300 at the Fullicks Stadium.
And there was no fairy-tale ending for Hull City bound youngster Johan ter Horst - one of the three to miss from the spot after the tie ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Leatherhead scorer Tom Bradbrook converted the first in the shoot-out, before Phil Stevenson made it 1-1.
Invicta goalkeeper Tim Roberts saved the Surrey club's second by ex-Maidstone midfielder Ian Draycott, only for Matt Newman to fail with the next.
Ex-Sittingbourne No.2 Jamie Coyle then scored to make it 2-1.
Ter Horst then missed - former Invicta player-coach Darren Smith converted Leatherhead's third, before Dane Luchford failed with Invicta's fourth to settle the contest.
Leatherhead took an 11th-minute lead with a goal out of nothing, Bradbrook netting with a 25-yard shot that crept inside the top left hand corner.
Invicta's Josh Vincent fired over and the home side had to wait into stoppage-time for their first effort on target in the first half by Michael Yianni.
Yianni was replaced at half-time by Phil Stevenson as Neil Cugley changed his formation, looking for more width.
They were inches away from an equaliser as both Ter Horst and Paul Booth went close - the latter shaving the bar with one effort.
Invicta looked as though they were going out until Booth's 87th-minute equaliser gave them a lifeline.
Matt Newman clipped in a free-kick and Booth rose to glance in a priceless effort - his 26th of the season.
Ter Horst and he then both went close to getting a late winner in added time.
Extra-time was a cagey affair with the youngster having two good chances before Invicta finished second best from the spot.
