Folkestone Rugby Club players will go out to win for James Mead on Saturday after the scrum-half broke his neck in training.

Mead faces two months in a neck brace and is unlikely to play again until 2016 after suffering the serious injury just days before the start of the new season.

Folkestone head coach Leigh Fitchie said: "James broke a vertebrae in his neck during a contact session.

"He’ll be wearing a brace for six to eight weeks provisionally and he might miss half of the season but the good news is that he doesn’t need surgery.

"He’s an important part of the squad and he’ll come back stronger.

"The guys will go out and do a little bit more for someone they know would be out there if he was fit. It adds a bit more fuel to the fire when you’re going out to get something for somebody else.

"It’s something we will talk about in the build-up to Saturday’s game."

That game is away to Bromley in London 3 South East, with Folkestone aiming to improve on last season’s fifth-placed finish.

Fitchie said: "It’s a big game because Bromley will be one of our toughest fixtures.

"We beat them home and away last season so they’ll be wanting to turn that around. We always have close games against them and there’s a chance on Saturday to lay down a marker against one of our main competitors to see where we’re at.

"We haven’t really spoken about the season as a whole, just about Saturday and putting in a performance."
