Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley praises goalkeeper Bailey Vose after penalty save in FA Cup win over Chichester City

Boss Neil Cugley praised Folkestone goalkeeper Bailey Vose after his penalty save in their FA Cup win.

Vose, who joined this summer, denied Chichester’s Kaleem Haitham from the spot having fouled skipper Josh Clack in Invicta’s 3-0 win.

Cugley’s men responded well after they had lost 4-2 at home to Cray Wanderers last Tuesday in Isthmian Premier.

The Invicta manager said: “To be fair, he made a mistake for the fourth goal against Cray and was a bit down. But that penalty save gives you a lift, doesn’t it? That’s always nice.

“He’s still only a young goalie, really, but he’s done all right for us. The crowd like a penalty save, don’t they?

“It was quite important at that time. They were starting to get back into it.

“I’m not saying they would have got anything out of the game but they definitely started to get on the ball a bit more. It was a good save at an important time.”

Invicta raced into a 2-0 lead inside eight minutes through goals from striker Ade Yusuff and right-back Josh Vincent before Vose, who has replaced long-serving keeper Tim Roberts, made his big save.

Frontman Ira Jackson then scored his first goal since his return to the club late on to book their place in the Third Qualifying Round.

Invicta have been drawn away to National League South club Dulwich Hamlet on October 1 after they saw off Folkestone's rivals Margate.

Cugley reflected: “To be fair, they were all right, but I think we had a bit of anger and disappointment from the Tuesday game. So we started like a train and got 2-0 up.

“We had a bit of a meeting about the Cray game, which we should have won comfortably but ended up losing 4-2. That wasn’t very nice!

“We got that out of our system in the chat, really, and I think we came out well.

“It’s a good job we did because, to be fair to Chichester, they were really good towards the end of the first half. The penalty save was good for us at an important time, really.

“Okay, we should have won by more, really, but you have to give them a lot of credit.”

Jackson rejoined Folkestone on the eve of the new season, having gone on to play in the Football League after a successful first stint at Invicta.

The 25-year-old got off to a slow start this campaign, though, but finally found the net against Chichester to help his side pocket the £3,375 in prize money on offer.

“It was very important, I think it was starting to play on his mind a bit. He’s that sort of lad,” Cugley said of Jackson, who had previously gone seven games without a goal.

“Sometimes, you get decisions wrong, obviously, but we kept him on. Ade had already been booked so we took him off.

“Ira missed a couple but the goal was a really great finish. I’m sure he’ll come good now.”

Folkestone were due to visit Corinthian-Casuals last night but that match was postponed with a tree - bizarrely - having fallen through their clubhouse and changing rooms.

This Saturday, Invicta are back at Cheriton Road as they host Potters Bar who are managed by Deal-born Sammy Moore. They had started well in the league but had suffered back-to-back defeats after their 2-1 weekend FA Cup loss at home to Romford, prior to a 3-1 win over Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday.

“As always happens when you get manager-of-the-month, you then have a couple of bad results,” joked Cugley. “But they have got good players.

“I think they’ve increased the budget to have a go and it’s sort of paying off for them at the moment, isn’t it? It will be a big game, it will be an important game.

“Sammy Moore, the manager, lives locally anyway. That adds something to it and I’m looking forward to facing him.”

Darren Beale, formerly of Dover, Hythe, Ramsgate and Herne Bay, is Moore’s assistant at Potters Bar. He was sent off in their FA Cup loss.
