Folkestone Invicta delighted with FA Cup win and prize money boost

Manager Neil Cugley admits everything is going smoothly at Folkestone – but he has been in football long enough to know how quickly fortunes can change.

Cugley’s side came from behind to topple highly-rated Kent opposition for the second time in six days on Saturday, winning 3-2 at home to Greenwich Borough with a stoppage-time winner to follow-up their Bank Holiday victory by the same score at Tonbridge Angels.

Kieron McCann’s 95th-minute header ensured his side £3,000 in prize money and booked a FA Cup second qualifying round tie at home to newly-promoted Bostik Premier rivals Tooting & Mitcham on September 16.

Cugley added: “I’m delighted that we got through. We’ve got a lot of excellent people who work so hard raising money for our club but it takes a lot of work to raise £3,000 and obviously the directors are happy right now.

“We’ll take the draw too, especially another home game. It gives us a nice little run of home
games.

“We’ll have them watched as we always do but it gives us a chance – we’re doing all right at the moment.

“The last two have been good games. We’re an open side and it makes things entertaining to watch.

“Greenwich are a good side but we had a bit more energy and fitness than they did. We look good.”

Before the tie, Invicta face the visit of two of the division’s early high-flyers in the space of four days as first Staines, sat seventh, visit the Fullicks on Saturday (3pm) before second-placed Leatherhead, with four wins in five games, arrive on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Cugley added: “The Staines manager (Johnson Hippolyte) knows what he’s doing. He knows a lot of players and it’s another team in our league with a great catchment area.

“Staines and Leatherhead on Tuesday are the sort of games we want to be picking up points from, though. We’re at home and we have a strong squad.

“It’s a nice position to be in but I know that in football it only takes a minute for everything to change.”

Cugley revealed that an injury to defender Matt Newman – who was stretchered off inside four minutes on Saturday – might only keep him out for a couple of weeks.

Ian Draycott (hamstring) was another to miss Tuesday night's Kent Senior Cup win at Hythe, as Cugley shuffled his pack.

After the game finished 1-1, Invicta progressed 5-4 on penalties.
