Harry Smith has followed Johan ter Horst into the Football League after leaving Folkestone to sign for Millwall.

Almost 18 months since ter Horst signed for Hull City, target man Smith has earned himself a two-year deal with the Lions in League 1.

Smith, who was also on Gillingham’s radar, impressed on trial at The Den and completed his big move on Monday.

Folkestone manager Neil Cugley admitted the transfer fee was less than the club wanted but with appearance add-ons as part of the deal, quick progress for Smith at Millwall would mean more cash for Invicta.

As part of the deal, the Lions will bring their first-team to the Fullicks Stadium for a friendly next summer.

Smith’s departure leaves a big hole as he was a class act in amber and black but as Cugley said: "So was Johan ter Horst and so was Paul Booth. At this standard, you have to just accept it and move on.

"It’s no good looking back. My front-two could have been him (Smith) and Johan – that wouldn’t have been too bad, would it? But those things happen at clubs.

"He’ll be missed, of course he will. It’s been an incredibly quick turnaround in the sense that we paid a small fee to Sittingbourne for him and then to get a good return on him straight away, we can’t moan at that.

"I’m afraid our club’s always going to be a little bit tight financially so we can’t moan."

Smith started just 13 games for Folkestone, scoring 13 goals.

Cugley said: "It’s slightly different from Johan because he came through the youth section. We knew we had a talent there from quite an early age.

"With this one, we took a gamble and you’re not sure how those people will go.

"We’ve got some good young lads coming through and we’ll still carry on looking for little bargains around Kent.

"We’re definitely not there to stop players getting on. If we could do to every player what we’ve done with Harry, we’d be laughing."
