Neil Cugley admits things could scarcely be going better at the moment – but you won’t find the Folkestone manager taking anything for granted.
Invicta went three points clear at the top of Isthmian Premier with Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Bishop’s Stortford and remain unbeaten since March 23.
Their achievement resulted in Cugley being named as the top division’s manager-of-the-month for August, but the 62-year-old knows just how quickly things can change.
He said: “It (the award) shows that we’re doing things right at the club, but I’ve got good people around me who help and they deserve just as much credit.
“The players have done tremendously well and you have to take your hat off to them. They got on a roll at the end of last season and they’ve just carried it on, which isn’t always easy.
“Yes, we haven’t changed the team much, which helps, but it’s been them who have been setting the standards.
“It’s going well but we all know how football has a habit of stopping you in your tracks.”
The Stortford victory was Invicta’s sixth in seven league matches but even Cugley admits he had doubts they would find a winner as the clock ticked down.
The game was goalless until 11 minutes from time when full-back Josh Vincent marked his return from a calf injury by grabbing the only goal.
Cugley said: “If I’m honest I couldn’t see where a goal was coming from. You hope it will of course.
“We started really well. In the first 20-25 minutes we were outstanding but then we went off the boil a bit.
“When you’re top these teams, they come and get numbers behind the ball.
“We were just about to make a change and then Sam Hasler produced a great ball – he’s probably the only player at the club who has that in his locker – and Josh did the rest.
“It was nice for him to score after passing the fitness test to play and, to be fair, for a full-back he’s get his fair share of goals.”
Invicta turn their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday when they travel to Hertfordshire to play Kings Langley in the second qualifying round.
Cugley would have preferred a home draw but believes his team are more than capable of going through against their Southern Premier Central opponents.
The winners of the tie receive £6,750.
He said: “I think we’re a dangerous side when we play away because of the pace we have in the side but I wouldn’t mind a replay.
“The supporters have been really getting behind us this season and you don’t always get that many opportunities to play at home in the FA Cup in a season.”
Forward Jerson Dos Santos (groin) is rated 50/50 for the tie while there is a chance Ian Draycott could feature on the bench.
