The big Bostik Premier derby at the Fullicks Stadium finished all-square before a bumper crowd of 946 on Monday.
Both goals came in the second half, with Frannie Collin's superbly-taken volley for Margate being cancelled out by Ade Yusuff's penalty after visiting defender Tom Wynter had been sent off for handling Kieron McCann's goalbound shot.
The draw was not enough to take Invicta back to the top but the result did extend Margate's winless run to seven games, the last six of which have all been draws, denting their play-off chances. It was also the second game running Steve Watt's side had finished with 10.
Invicta were unchanged from the side which beat Lowestoft 2-1 in their last game while Margate welcomed back keeper Lenny Pidgeley who missed Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Worthing due to illness. Jack Evans and Jay May were both recalled while among the subs was new signing from Kingstonian, Baselle Aristride.
Invicta did most of the early pressing and had their first sight of goal inside three minutes when Yusuff got goal side of Gate defender George Essuman but fired into the side netting.
Johan ter Horst had another decent shooting chance in the 11th minute but pulled his low effort wide of the far post.
Margate's first move of note saw Jordan Chiedozie's fine crossfield pass pick out Dave Martin whose cross was headed comfortably into the arms of home keeper Tim Roberts by May
Chiedozie then volleyed wide from a Frannie Collin free-kick and featured in the half's most controversial moment when he went down in the box after a challenge by Matt Newman but instead of winning a penalty he was booked for simulation.
His mood hardly improved minutes later when he steered the ball into the net from Martin's cross but the flag was already raised for offside.
As the cut and thrust nature of the half continued Sam Hasler's whipped corner went right across the face of the Gate goal before Jay May squandered the best chance of the opening half on 35minutes. Chiedozie did well to beat the offside trap to run onto Collin's nicely weighted through ball but his inviting low cross was somehow stabbed wide from close range by May at the far post.
By the time the teams emerged for the second half ran had started to fall, making an already testing surface even more challenging.
Invicta felt they had a good penalty shout five minutes in when Yusuff went down with two defenders around him but referee Steven Hughes waved away their protests.
Mr Hughes had another big call to make on 54 minutes when Gate's Martin went in late on Nat Blanks as he stretched to make amends following a poor first touch.
To his credit Blanks did not make a meal of it and that might have been why the referee showed leniency.
Invicta continued to have more of the ball but the Gate defence stood firm and midway through the half the visitors broke the deadlock.
Martin's deep corner found its way to the far post where Collin spectacularly volleyed into the far top corner.
That is how it stayed until 12 minutes from the end when Wynter saw red after blocking McCann's goalbound shot with his arm. It came just seconds after the same home player had been brilliantly denied by Pidgeley.
Yusuff confidently despatched the penalty beating Pidgeley high away to his left but hard though they pushed Invicta could not find a winner even in the five minutes of added time.
The closest they came to a goal was when McCann's skidding low drive was parried by Pidgeley and the ball cleared.
There was even a late call for a Margate penalty when substitute Sid Sollis went down in the box but nothing was given.
