Folkestone Invicta missed out on a Bostik Premier Division play-off berth despite beating Bognor Regis 1-0 at Fullicks Stadium.

Ira Jackson grabbed the winner in the 69th minute with a clinical finish after breaking in-behind the visitors' back four.

The result didn't prove to be enough to move Invicta into the top five, with both Carshalton and Merstham winning elsewhere.

Folkestone started the brighter of the sides and almost took the lead when Micheal Everitt headed wide from a corner after Bognor goalkeeper Dan Lincoln had flapped at the ball.

The visitors responded by breaking down the other end of the pitch, with some fine defending denying Emmett Dunn from latching onto the end of a dangerous cross.

Bognor captain Harvey Whyte then fired an effort over from the edge of the box having faked twice to work the ball back onto his right foot.

A spell of pressure continued with defender Chad Field heading wide form a corner, before Leon Maloney was booked for diving after going down in the Folkestone penalty area.

Jackson hit back for Invicta as he breached three challenges and found the run of Kieron McCann, who seemed to be caught in two minds when his cross-shot sailed beyond both his teammates and the far post.

Folkestone thought they had taken the lead in the 29th minute when Finn O'Mara's superb cross was turned home by Johan Ter Horst from close range, only for the celebrations to be cut short by the linesman's raised flag.

Jackson threatened again with a low strike to test Lincoln following some tidy link-up play with Ade Yusuff on the left-hand side of the final third.

He was involved once more minutes later, bursting to the byline but watching his driven cross evade all yellow shirts in the box.

The No.11 then produced a cynical foul to thwart a counter-attack, which came to no avail as Maloney curled the resulting free-kick over.

Yusuff had a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when he drew a save from Lincoln before skying the rebound from 10 yards out.

Bognor substitute Jimmy Muitt created an early sighting of goal shortly after the restart but failed to trouble Tim Roberts with his left-footed shot.

Roberts then rescued Invicta with a terrific save to tip Ashton Leigh's volley over the crossbar, with his side rewarded him by clearing the subsequent corner.

Reece Myles-Meekums was the latest the try and open the scoring on the hour mark, cutting in on his right foot and rattling the Folkestone crossbar with his curling strike.

Folkestone's response came in the form of a Josh Vincent header into the side-netting and a penetrating run from Ter Horst until he was eventually swarmed by recovering Bognor defenders.

Ter Horst should have made it two on the next attack, delaying his shot in time for Bognor defenders to snatch the ball deep in the penalty area.

Yusuff maintained Invicta's threat on the counter with a perfect first touch to beat his marker but seeing his close-range attempt stopped by the feet of Lincoln.

This was followed by an excellent block to deny Yusuff from six yards out amid Folkestone's push for a second.

Neil Cugley's men gave their supporters a thrilling finish, with a goal-mouth scramble serving as the pick of the action before the referee brought the game and the season to an end.
