Folkestone tennis player Ruben Mudd’s summer of success included singles title at South of England Grade 3 Championships as Hythe Lawn Tennis Club member reached final at every event he played

Teenage tennis player Ruben Mudd was celebrating one success after another in a memorable summer.

Folkestone’s Mudd kicked off his purple patch when he defeated Joshua Houseman, fighting back after losing the first set 4-1 to win the second set 4-0 and clinch the match tie-break 10-6 to claim the men’s Grade 4 London and South East Tour title.

That event was held at Freedom Leisure, Maidstone.

He then came out on top in the under-16 boys’ final against Jack Simpson 6-3, 6-2 in the 96th Woking Open Grade 3 Tournament.

The following week, Mudd was holding the winner’s trophy for the under-16 boys’ singles at the South of England Grade 3 Championships, held at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.

He defeated William McKay 6-2, 7-6 in that final.

Another Mudd triumph followed at the Sutton Tennis Academy Grade 3 Summer Tournament, which saw him defeat Charlie Lilley 6-1, 6-1.

At last month’s Tunbridge Wells Summer Open under-16 boys’ singles Grade 3 event, sponsored by Eastbourne College, he was victorious against Arran Avril 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Mudd made the finals in all the events he entered in the summer, losing 7-5, 6-4 to Giancarlo Minchella in the final of the Giffnock Grade 3 Junior Open, sponsored by Glenlith Interiors, and at the Fast 4 Open Regional Tour at Rippon.

The 15-year-old went down 4-1, 4-0 to Paul Johnson - who is a coach at The University of Leeds and is the men’s captain for Yorkshire.

Mudd is coached by Christopher Hollands of CH Coaching and is a also a member of Hythe LTC.
